Construction of a bank sluiceway at Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydropower Plant

Work started: February 2005; to be completed: August 2010.

Construction of a sluiceway complex comprising two derivation tunnels and a drain channel is being done.
The length of the tunnels is 2 tunnels by1,130 m each
The diameter of the tunnels is 141.3 m
The throughput of two tunnels is 8,000 cubic meters per second
The permissible water velocity is 22 meters per second

The drill and blast tunneling method with separation into two ledges (calotte and core at the tunnel height).

Equipment used:

  • Axera T11 drilling assemblies. Maximatic by Tamrock;
  • TORO 301 rock-loading machines;
  • MoAZ articulated vehicle;
  • Robolt anchor drilling equipment by Tamrock;
  • BeLAZ dump trucks;
  • Hitachi excavators with a 2 m3 shovel;
  • Komazu bulldozers T-355, T-155;
  • ROCK drills by Atlas Copco

The standards that are much higher than the Russian equivalents are used in the international practice when calculating throughput of sluiceway structures. In Europe, the volume of water dumping for a maximum possible flood is calculated using the probability ratio of once per 10,000 or more years. Without a doubt considering the size of the dam and the volume of the water reservoir, the sluiceways of Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydropower Plant require a similar approach.

The new bank sluiceway will meet modern international requirements for dumping flood water and will raise the reliability and safety of the hydropower plant’s operation.
