Tunnel System No.3 on Adler - "Alpika-Service" Mountain Resort Route

The tunnel system is located between the 24th and 29th km marks of the Olympic route.

The construction began in the 2nd quarter of 2009 and completed in 2013.

This is the longest tunnel system of the Olympic route in Sochi. The railway tunnel is 4,615-meters long and the motorway tunnel is 3,201-meters long. The service and escape gallery, which is 5,853-meters long, consists of two underground workings: the first one (which is 3,208-meters long) will be used for servicing the motorway tunnel and the second gallery (which is 2,645-meters long) will support railway tunnel operation.

Because of the challenging geological conditions, both tunnel boring and mining machines were used for driving the third tunnel system workings.

Herrenknecht 13210 HART tunnel boring machine (13.2-m diameter) was used to drive the motorway tunnel. The work started in March 2010 and completed in February 2012.

Lovat RM 394 DS tunnel boring machine (10.2-m diameter), which advanced from the southern tunnel system entry, and a mining machine moving from the tunnel northern end were used for railway tunnel construction. The decision to drive from the opposite sides of the face was made after a detailed study of the site geological features had been conducted, which showed that there are vast fractured zones in unstable rocks in the tunnel construction area. Based on the tunneling strategy, first the mining machine is to drive through the fractured zones over the distance of 250 m moving from the railway tunnel northern entry. The tunneling work was carried out from October 2010 to January 2012.

The service and escape gallery was driven simultaneously from the southern and northern tunnel entries. The work started in March 2010, and the tunneling was conducted using Lovat RME 243 DS tunnel boring machine (6.2-m diameter). The first section was commissioned on March 1, 2011. The builders came across fractured zones during tunneling, and special methods had to be used to advance the machine under challenging mining conditions. The second section of the gallery was being driven using Lovat RME 232 SE tunnel boring machine (5.6-m diameter), which is moving from the northern tunnel entry. Tunnelling work on this section were conducted from October 2010 to September 2011. After the second gallery section has been completed, both galleries will be tied together to form an integrated service and escape system.
