Combined motor- and railroad Adler – Krasnaya Polyana

The combined motor- and railroad Adler – Alpika-Service Mountain Resort (Krasnaya Polyana settlement) will be commissioned in advance of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and won’t be just the main passenger highway for the Olympics: it will become an important link in the regional transportation infrastructure. Interchanges will connect the new highway with the existing road and federal highway M-27.

A system of engineering structures will appear within a fifty-kilometer-long section of the road: 12 tunnels (27 km total length) and 46 bridges. Thanks to this design solution, the highway won’t snake continuously around mountainous terrain, but will link Adler with the Alpika-Service terminal station in a virtually straight line. With this project in mind, the Company has ordered tunnel-boring shields from leading foreign manufacturers including Lovat (Canada) and Herrenknecht (Germany).

The Adler – Alpika-Service Mountain Resort highway project involves construction of rail and motor roads within a single right-of-way.

Total path length will be 48.2 km.

Enterprises of the SK MOST Group are carrying out work from the 14th to 46th kilometer of the route.

In the 32 km section, construction of six tunnel assemblies is planned, including:

  • 6 railroad tunnels with path length of 10 4085 m;
  • 3 auto-road tunnels with path length of 7 697.8 m;
  • 3 service tunnels with path length of 9 328.7 m.

Along with the tunnels, the following structures will be built:

  • 10.8 km of railway tracks and 23 railway bridges with the total length of almost 9.5 km;
  • over 11.5 km of traffic and 23 road bridges with the total length over 10.5 km.

The planned capacity of the Adler – Alpika-Service Mountain Resort railroad is 6 train pairs per hour. The trains will travel at speeds up to 160 km/h. Positions of the trains will be controlled by means of a GLONASS navigation satellite system.
