The self-sealing concrete will be used to erect the towers of cable-stayed bridge to Russky Island in Vladivostok. January 12, 2010

A new concreting technology was first used for construction of an overhead crossing over the Eastern Bosphorus; for construction of the 70 m temporary support at Russky, special self- compacting concrete was used for the first time.

About 500 m3 of highly mobile mixture, fabricated at the “USK MOST” branch in Vladivostok, was laid in a non-interruptable manner in the foundation frame of the structure being erected. Located between bridge supports Ì8 and Ì9, this foundation frame will take part of the load during erection of the main bridge crossing to Russkiy Island.

Head of “USK MOST” Vladivostok branch, Alexey Baranov, confirmed that the latest techniques will be widely utilized for concreting 320 m bridge towers on both sides of the Strait. The main advantages of self-sealing concrete are flowability; ability to compact (thanks to special additives) under the effect of its own gravitation; non-fractioning after being laid in the frame; taking the design position under the effect of its own weight without vibration. Doing away with vibrocompacting, along with energy, time and labour savings, also offer substantial improvements in quality and homogeneity of reinforced concrete items.

Self-sealing concrete was invented in Japan in 1986; it was used during construction of the world’s longest overbridge crossing - Akashi Kaikyo (3,911 m). Today, this product is widely used by leading European, Chinese and US companies. In strict observation of the formulation of the special high-mobility mixture and rules and procedures, this state-of-the art concreting technology is being used by builders for construction of the bridge to Russky Island.
